High schools steer way to cattle competition: Cattle are considered the best sport for animals and they are good at winning," a district spokesman said in a statement. "The school will have to evaluate its plans on whether cattle and other species can be used within the school, given the large population of students."
"We are taking this matter seriously and we will work with the authorities and the student's parents to address these concerns in a fair and responsible manner," he said.
As news of the incident spread, thousands of school children took to social media to express their dismay and anger with the district.
At one high school, "a student had to be escorted from class" in the middle of the night due to cattle "fodder." Some parents sent their children to the gym. School was shut off until 11 p.m.
Another high school suspended several students, but all were quickly allowed to return to school.
One post on Facebook reads: "The student's father was forced out of the school by cattle."
According to the Independent, the district will spend about $100,000 to install a temporary fence around the school and an additional $15,000 to pay for the fence to keep out other animals, such as pigs.

BOULDER (CBS) ” After more than two years of construction, a new rock face is on the north side of the Boulder Mountain region this week.
"There's a lot of history with this rock," said Greg Schoen, project management director for the Boulder Mountain Community Trust, which is behind the restoration project.
A big chunk of the rock came down during a historic avalanche in 2005 and had to be excavated to the exact spot.
"The entire piece of limestone was pretty much thrown to the side and that was how we took off the base of the mountain," Schoen said. "We basically drove out the top and out the rock and we put the base of the stone in an old cement mixer, took it back up and used the cement to rebuild the concrete base and we just added more and more base and we did this for about three or four months, and then finally the whole stone slab just fell off."
When Schoen looked up at a spot that has not been properly restored, he could see what looked like a gaping chasm between the mountain and the surface. A few years later, he and a group of volunteer engineers began exploring the chasm, but they eventually found the culprit that has kept the entire area from being fully restored.
"That's why we started working to keep it," Schoen said.
The rock structure at this spot on the North Fork of the Colorado River is referred to as the Baughlin Rock.
According to an area resident, they dug up about $10,000 worth of granite for the project and the area currently holds almost $12 million worth of assets from all manner of uses.
This time round, the mountain has the potential to hold $50 million worth of valuable assets. That has spurred a $20 million plan in the area and $20 million more to bring other assets back to the area.
Boulders will return to Boulder this fall under the new plan, and the community will spend a year doing work on the region's rockface.
Schoen anticipates the entire site will be fully reworked by the end of 2017, when the state of Colorado officially gives the approval to proceed with the project.
